   Discover your Hometown [02/07 11:35PM]
Many of us spend thousands, even lakhs of rupees traveling the globe in search of new and exciting destinations to discover, but how many of us make the effort to discover our hometown."Geography learning games is a great way to open your childs eye to his surroundings, and not just to the backyard! Helping your child to realize that there is more out there, than what he sees at first glance. A surprising number of people have never made the effort to visit the numerous tourist destinations in our hometown. We all make a mark on where we live and where we live makes a mark on us. Thousands of people living years in Delhi have never made a trip to the Quatab Minar, millions living in Mumbai have never been to the Elephanta caves. Talking to your child about how their environment is different to other people in the world, is a great introduction to geography, and ... Why don't we make as much as an effort to discover the places we live in, as we do to discover a place we visit. Having a floor map of the world, and books with pictures of different countrys is a good idea. Naturally when you live in a certain place you don't have to go to the tourist destinations to get a feel of the culture, traditions and history of that place. By looking at different country’s you can open their minds to different music, food and way of life. But taking your children to visit monuments of historical and geographical importance will help them put a face to the matter in their text books. But, its more than just maps, learning about the links between our lives and the environment around us is central to geography. So this summer take your children on a tour to discover your hometown. A great idea to help your child realize where places are, and where food comes from is by looking in your own kitchen. If you live in Mumbai, here are some of the places worth a visit. A lot of food in your kitchen, has been imported from countries all over the world. Gateway of India You may have passed by the Gateway of India thousands of times, but how many times have you actually gotten off the car and walked around the gateway.Pick out some packets of food from your kitchen cupboard and ask your child of find out where each came from by reading the label. Not many of us know why the Gateway was built. Once your child has a list of places, both here and overseas, get them to find out where these places are by using a map, an atlas or a globe. Spend an afternoon or an evening at the Gateway and discover its significance with your children. Show your child ways to improve their immediate surroundings, by caring for the environment, keeping the park or town tidy and recycling. buy wow gold Read the plaques put on display. One of my favourite Geography learning games is called Captain Planet and the Planeteers. Appreciate the magnificence of the colonial style architecture and intricate latticework. In this game you have to save the Earth from looters and polluters. cell phones Follow up your visit by taking a short cruise on the yachts docked by the gateway. The Captain Planet game introduces children to environmental issues such as water pollution, endangered species and overflowing landfills through fun and exciting game play. Wouldn't this be a far better option than visiting the cinema. Games and Puzzles make great Geography learning games, something like Great States Junior is a fun way for your child to learn the States. mp3 Prince of Wales Museum Close to the Gateway of India stands the Prince of Wales Museum. And traditional puzzles are always a challenge. If your child is more of a nature fan than a history buff, you could take a quick round of this museum, and then go next door to the Bombay Natural History Society which has a huge collection of flora and fauna. Also look at local areas in their neighbourhood such as park, supermarket, roads, field or farms. wow Jehangir Art Gallery Introduce your children to the world of art by taking them to visit the Jehangir Art Gallery. Describe what they would usually find there, such as animals in the farm, people and food in the supermarket and so on. The art gallery has exhibitions all year round and usually display paintings by prominent Indian artists. It's a good idea to use geographical words like ‘hill’, ‘river’ and ‘motorway’ so that your child can talk about their environment confidently and more descriptively. wow gold Some artists offer moderately priced paintings which just might be within your budget, and who knows, if your luck, and the artists' luck, holds out the painting may just triple in value in a couple of years!
